Do you want to get a patio heater to extend the summer season?

Once the leaves start changing colours, many people start putting away their outdoor furniture. However, there are many ways to enjoy your patio for a few extra weeks.

One of these methods is to buy a patio heater. Let go of the throws and the four-layer wool sweaters. This device lets you enjoy your outdoor space longer while maximizing your comfort. With the right appliance, you can therefore continue to entertain guests under your garden shelter even when the temperature gets colder.

Auvents Polo has been an outdoor layout specialist for over 45 years. Discover our expert advice to choose the best possible patio heater for your patio.

Patio heater: where to buy?

Have you decided to buy a patio heater? Then you will have to choose where you want to purchase your device. Our first tip is not to shop for your device online. Although you can find out about the different models online, it’s always best to visit a store. That way, if you have any questions, a specialist will be able to answer them and advise you quickly.

As for the store itself, we strongly recommend turning to a specialty store or shop. Big box stores like BMR and Costco have a few basic models, but there is no guarantee that it will be suited to your space. In addition, a clerk at the store won’t be able to advise you on the optimal way to place your device.

That’s not all. By purchasing your patio heater at a big box store, you run the risk that it will be improperly installed. In the long term, your device might therefore cost you more. You also risk your device not lasting as long.

We consider buying a patio heater to be an investment, so it’s important to buy from a specialist to receive the right advice and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Electric or gas?

When it comes time to choose, many people ask themselves this question. That’s why we’ve written an entire article about this subject. Here are the broad outlines.

Gas

Gas patio heaters are generally more powerful and let you heat larger areas. However, you shouldn’t overlook the downsides that accompany them. Gas devices release toxic odours and fumes, so they can’t be installed in confined spaces, such as inside a house.

If you are the type of person to review your outdoor layout frequently, gas heaters may be an attractive option for you. Most of these devices come with wheels, so they are easy to move.

However, gas patio heaters require more maintenance than electrical devices. As with your grill, you will therefore need to go back and forth to Canadian Tire to fill up your tank.

Electric

Electrical devices are suited to all types of patios. They are also an eco-friendly solution, since they use electricity from Hydro-Québec. Electricity is clean energy; this is not the case with gas.

In addition, the electricity consumption of a patio heater is low. A 3000W device costs 39¢ per hour on average in electricity and covers a space of about 8 ft. by 8 ft.

Finally, electrical devices are also much safer. They don’t give off any toxic odours or fumes and can even be installed in enclosed spaces.

Which brand of electric patio heater to choose?

As patio heater experts, our suggestion is to get a device from a recognized brand. A brand’s reputation is important and will allow you to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Our experts therefore recommend Infratech devices. These heaters have lamps that can last up to 5,000 hours, which lets you spend many beautiful afternoons and early evenings with your family.

Of course, nothing is stopping you from getting a tabletop model. These are less expensive to purchase. Unfortunately, they are also much less efficient and consume more energy. Replacing an Infratech lamp costs $200 on average. By purchasing a low-end device, it becomes more expensive in the long term. These tabletop heaters have a higher consumption, and you will need to replace the lamps more often.

Installing an electric patio heater

Like any specialized job, it’s best to let the professionals handle it. To install an infrared heater, it must be connected to a 240 V power source. You will therefore need to ask a certified electrician for help. It is this kind of technical detail that a clerk at a store doesn’t necessarily know.

At Auvents Polo, we know several certified electricians. We are therefore capable of recommending a professional to you to install your electric heater.

Can I use my infrared patio heater in the winter?

The short answer? Yes, you can use your infrared heater in the winter. The long answer, however, is to take the necessary precautions. For example, make sure that there isn’t any ice or frost on your lamps.

If you want to use your heater in the winter, our advice is to get some winter curtains for your patio. This lets you close your patio and protect your furniture and appliances from the elements. In addition, with quality custom curtains, you can easily stay on your patio until November in optimal comfort.

Will I be comfortable on my patio even in the event of wind?

If your heater is infrared, yes. The lamps of these devices emit radiant heat. This heat is transferred to people and even certain objects.

However, for any other type of heater, the efficiency varies. For example, a gas patio heater connected to a 20-litre tank can heat a space of about 10 ft. by 10 ft. However, since it heats the air, the efficiency is reduced in the event of wind.
